The BIGGEST Election in WOLRD HISTORY [2019]

The biggest election in world history is happening
right now. India is choosing 543 out 545 members for
their lower house, the Lok Sabha. With a population of more than a billion people,
they have over 900 million eligible voters, spread out all over the majority of the Indian
subcontinent. An election of this incredible size is truly
a logistic nightmare, but there is one rule which makes it even harder to arrange. There should be a polling place within 2 kilometres
of everybody’s home. They use the slogan “No voter left behind”. This means in order to reach some the most
uninhabited areas, the election officials had to trek across mountains, ride through
Jungles on the back of elephants and cross rivers. In the Gir forrest in the state of Gujarat,
they set up a voting station for the only resident, a Senior citizen. When he voted the participation for the area
automatically became 100%. In Zanskar in Ladakh, part of Jammu and Kashmir
officials had to spend days, bring tents and sleeping bags, and make a climb three and
half kilometres to set up a pooling station in the remote mountains. An election of that magnitude is impossible
to arrange on a single day, so instead it is being held in seven phases from 11 April
to 19 May 2019. The country is divided into 7 areas which
are voting at different times. All the votes are then counted together on
23’th of May, which is also the day when winner will be announced. With such a long election, to avoid early
results affecting areas voting later, the commission banned the release of exit polls
during the election. And just to be sure, they also banned superstitious
predictions made by astrologers and tarot card readers. Almost 4 million Electronic voting machines
are used at more than a million voting stations. That means 65 of the world’s countries wouldn’t
even have enough people to cast a vote on every single machine. Over 2 million state police personnel have
been deployed. More than 15 million Indians just turned 18
or 19 and can vote for the first time. India and Bangladesh used to have an infamously
messy border with plenty of enclaves on each side of the border. There was even an Indian enclave in Bangladesh,
with a Bangladeshi enclave inside, which again contained an Indian enclave. This was the world’s only third-order enclave. In 2015 India and Bangladesh decided to clean
up to the border and agreed to swap a lot of these territories, now letting the people
in the newly Indian parts vote for the very first time. For nearly 40.000 transgender people it’ll
will also be their first time voting registered neither as male nor female, but as third. Overseas more than 70.000 Indians will vote. Why is it only 543 out of the 545 seats, which
are up for grabs? Well, the last two members are selected directly
by the president of India. Right now the current prime minister is Narendra
Modi and he is representing the BJ party. His main opponent is Rahul Gandhi from the
Indian National Congress. Rahul’s father Rajiv Gandhi was actually
also prime minister of India, as was his grandmother, Indira Gandhi and his great grandfather. So who is the good guy? Who should you vote for? Well, that’s out of the scope of this video
and I’m really not qualified to say. I’m just amazed by the election itself. It’ll be interesting to see who’s the
winner on May 23’th. Thank you for watching.

Great content, but my dislike is only because you used the incorrect map of India.

There isn't really anything surprising coming out on 23rd May… I mean at the the end of the day this is a one-sided election. Modi is loved by people and the opposition has incredibly failed to replace Modi from people's hearts. He's coming out as a winner and will probably grab more seats this time than he did in 2014, or as it seems.
