How to Talk About Politics with People Who Disagree with You

When it comes to politics, Americans are split
into tribes. Progressives, conservatives, and libertarians
each speak a different language. And the language that resonates with one tribe,
falls flat with the others. Progressives denounce oppression, and accuse
others of failing to do so. Conservatives denounce barbarism, and accuse
others of failing to do so. And libertarians denounce coercion, and accuse
others of failing to do so. People who disagree with you about politics
are not evil, and they’re not dumb. If you want to learn more about the three
languages of politics, you can find my book at libertarianism.org.

I can't recommend Mr. Klings books highly enough, I consider this book to be in the same vein as Jon Haidt or Josh Greene with a greater emphasis on politics. While a middle-of-the-road economist would focus on the trade-offs between oppression, barbarism and coercion in any particular policy, our media pushes into an all-or-nothing mindset.
